Counselling – Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost ?

Sessions are charged at a fee of £50 for individuals and £60 for couples.

How long is a session ?

Sessions will generally last 50 minutes.

How many sessions will be necessary ?

The number of sessions you need will vary according to what you are seeking to achieve through coming to counselling. In six to eight sessions it is possible to focus on a specific aspect of your life, or a distressing event, and to make progress in exploring, understanding and containing this such that you can function more confidently.

In longer term counselling you will be seeking to understand and come to terms with deeper underlying patterns of behaviour, emotions and attitudes to the world which are causing you distress. It is not really possible to say how long this will take as it depends on what emerges from the process, your motivation in dealing with difficult and painful feelings and what is helpful and appropriate at this time.

I will conduct regular reviews with you to ensure that the work we are doing together is relevant.

The above information applies to both individual and couple counselling.

How frequent are sessions ?

It is important that we meet regularly. This is partly in order to maintain the energy and focus of sessions and partly because studies show that the quality of relationship between counsellor and client is key to the therapeutic process – this is best achieved through regular meeting. Meetings are usually once a week at the same time each week.

How confidential is the process ?

The process is entirely confidential with a few exceptions. These are :

  • If I feel you, or a third party, might be at risk I will seek guidance from an appropriate professional. I will always discuss this with you in advance.
  • Sometimes counsellors are required to give evidence in a court of law.
  • I will talk with my supervisor about our work together being careful to preserve your anonymity – my supervisor is bound by the same code of confidentiality as myself which is found in the Code of Ethics of our professional institutions.
